Machine Shop Safety

UMD ESSR’s Machine Shop Safety program is intended to provide those who work in those shops the
means for identifying and controlling hazardous tasks and danger zones as well as the safeguards,
equipment, and work practices for reducing those risks.

All machine shops and makerspaces are required to register in the SciShield platform. For more information see SciShield Information or contact osh@umd.edu for assistance.

Potential hazards and examples that may be found in machine shops include the following:

Potential Hazard Examples
Electrical Exposures to live parts resulting in shocks, burns, falls
Physical Noise, flying debris, pinch, cuts
Chemical Acids, bases, solvents, gases, unlabeled containers, fumes
Biological Mold
Additional Safety Hazards Lockout/tagout, machine guarding

ESSR guides each UMD school/department that operates a machine shop in its responsibility to
develop safe and compliant operations.

Our guidance is provided through two primary facets: inspection and training.

  • Annual visits provide detection of potentially hazardous conditions, so that they can be corrected before an incident can occur.
  • Training enables those who manage and work in machine shops to identify and correct potential hazards throughout the year, so that UMD employees are safe every day.

Training Webinar Opportunities:

ESSR will conduct a machine shop safety webinar per request.

These webinars will provide shop managers and all additional users the opportunity to satisfy important training requirements and to get answers to your safety-related questions.
